Davis Brock: Places

Virtual Exhibition
On Exhibit in the Brady & Jeanne Foust Gallery from July 28 - October 1, 2023

The artwork of David Brock draws us into a supernatural view of our natural world. The shapes are familiar, the colors give a sense of the sun’s intensity: of heat. The artwork is as sturdy looking in structure and hue as the earth forms that he is painting. Bold rocks outlined in the darkest blacks give shape to the iconic features of a landscape of big skies. Everything is broken down into fundamental elements which seem to exceed the principles of the natural world.

About David Brock

My work, both in painting and drawing, centers around the architecture of the landscape, both grand and small, wild and domesticated, man-made or natural. Constructed utilizing multiple media and paired down to the compositional essentials of color and form, these works reflect my cognitive reconciliation with those often- times overlooked spaces as a means of self-understanding and grounding, refuge and reflection, of yearning for contemplation, peace, and solace.

Born and raised in a small town on the Front Range of Colorado, David graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a BA in Painting and Drawing and received an MFA in 2D Studies from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, OH. David currently is the Assistant Professor of Painting and Drawing at Sheridan College in Sheridan, WY. Before moving to Sheridan in 2016, he taught at the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire, the University of Wisconsin - Stout, and the Bowling Green State University art departments. He has also been the Gallery Director of the Janet Carson Gallery at the Eau Claire Regional Arts Center in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. His artwork has appeared in national and international juried and group exhibitions, along with numerous solo shows. David has been privileged to have had artist residencies in Petrified Forest National Park, AZ, and the Ucross Foundation in Ucross, WY. David has studied and lived for two years in Fukuoka, Japan, and for one year in Florence, Italy, along with extensively traveling throughout Europe and Asia.
