Artists' Reception - Shedding Light

December 14th, 2018 | 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Please join the artists for a gallery reception for the current exhibit Shedding Light in the James W Hansen Gallery.

Dana Major’s sculptural light installations and performative interactions investigate how perception creates reality using light, lens, reflection and personal interaction.

The lenses of microscopy and astronomy show patterns and processes that, bound up with the inherent limitations of ways of seeing, come to be called reality.

Major’s 2011 SAIC MFA follows her BA in Philosophy, and an 18-month arts apprenticeship in St. Petersburg, Russia. She maintains her studio at Mana Contemporary in Chicago. Her recent work has been shown at Threewalls, EXPO Chicago, 6018North, High Concept Labs, Elmhurst Art Museum, Hyde Park Art Center, Garfield Park Conserva-tory, and Chicago Loop Alliance.

Prior to her graduate work, Major led a successful 13-year career in the Fine Craft world with her production ceramic sculpture. She won awards and recognition at American Craft Council and other nationally recog-nized craft shows. She exhibited at 13 SOFA (Sculpture Object and Functional Art) shows, and sold and exhibited through 140 fine craft venues including the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, Blue Spiral in Asherville, NC, and the Society of Arts and Crafts Boston. Her work from this past era is represented in dozens of private and celebrity craft collections, including David Crosby, Ross Perot, Steve Van Zandt, Den-nis Franz, Lynn Sherr, Michael Richards (of Kramer character fame), and Steve Cropper.
