Faculty Recital : Phil Ostrander

September 18, 2020

Phil Ostrander

The first half of the program will be a collaboration with pianist Roger Bethard.  We will be performing Anthony Barfield’s Meditations in three movements.  Barfield is an African American composer who has written a number of powerful pieces for low brass and wind ensemble.  Barfield also is a film composer.  Roger and I will also perform movement one of John Cheetham’s Sonata for Trombone and Piano and Sigismond Stojowski’s Fantasie for trombone and piano.

The second half the recital evolved out of spending a lot of time practicing in my basement over the last six months and very little time playing in ensemble with other performers.  I recorded jazz piano/keyboard tracks at home and will play along with those recordings on trombone.  Each of the tunes I selected has a recording that I am paying tribute to.  Days of Wine and Roses honors Bill Evans’ famous recording with Toots Thielman.  Sweet Georgia Brown is based on Ella Fitzgerald’s recording with the Duke Ellington Orchestra (although this tune gets most of its notoriety from being the theme song for the Harlem Globetrotters Basketball Team).  I also have a untitled composition of my own on the second half.  We’ll have the audience vote on tune title options suggested by my 10 and 12 year old children.
